Numbers, dates, and amounts carry the heaviest deductions. When you hear '3 tablets twice daily' or '$450 bond,' write it on your notepad immediately before interpreting.
A formal doctor should sound formal in your Tamil interpretation. A worried parent should sound worried. Register mismatch is a common error that costs marks.
NAATI marks delivery speed. If you hesitate for more than 5 seconds after the chime, you lose delivery marks. Use the practice sessions to build confidence starting quickly.

The exam uses standard formal Tamil, the register used in news and official contexts. Avoid heavy regional colloquialisms and avoid Tanglish (Tamil–English mixing) in your interpretations. NAATI examiners expect formal register.
No. Tanglish (code-switching between Tamil and English) is penalised. You must interpret fully into the target language — if interpreting from English to Tamil, your response should be Standard Tamil throughout, not a mixture.
Very important. NAATI CCL scoring deducts heavily for incorrect numbers, dates, medication dosages, monetary amounts, and addresses. Practise listening for these specifically and always reproduce them exactly — Tamil number words (onru, irandu, moonru…) must match the source exactly.
Most candidates benefit from 4–8 weeks of daily practice covering all 12 topic domains. A common strategy is to attempt 2–3 dialogues daily, review model answers, and run at least 2 full mock tests in the week before the exam.
You need a combined score of 63/90 across the two exam dialogues. Each dialogue is marked out of 45. A score of 29/45 is the minimum per-dialogue threshold to avoid a complete fail on that dialogue alone.

Miss the diagnosis, drop the figure, or paraphrase it away and the deduction model marks it — the same way a NAATI examiner would.
These are Tamil-specific. They are not the generic advice you will find on every CCL site — they are the errors that show up when Tamil speakers interpret under time pressure.
This is the single biggest Tamil trap. Under pressure, candidates reach for செந்தமிழ் — the written register. It sounds unnatural in a doctor’s room, slows your delivery, and delivery is worth 7 marks. Interpret the way you would actually speak to a Tamil-speaking patient.
Tamil renditions run long. If you begin after the chime and then have to correct yourself, you lose delivery marks. Start within five seconds; keep going.
Diabetes, bond, lease, visa subclass — Tamil-speaking Australians use these in English. Forcing a pure Tamil equivalent invites distortion.
