The exam uses standard formal Malayalam, the register used in news and official contexts. Avoid heavy regional slang and avoid Manglish (Malayalam–English mixing) in your interpretations. NAATI examiners expect formal register.
No. Manglish (code-switching between Malayalam and English) is penalised. You must interpret fully into the target language — if interpreting from English to Malayalam, your response should be Standard Malayalam throughout, not a mixture.
Very important. NAATI CCL scoring deducts heavily for incorrect numbers, dates, medication dosages, monetary amounts, and addresses. Practise listening for these specifically and always reproduce them exactly — Malayalam number words (onnu, randu, moonnu…) must match the source exactly.
Most candidates benefit from 4–8 weeks of daily practice covering all 12 topic domains. A common strategy is to attempt 2–3 dialogues daily, review model answers, and run at least 2 full mock tests in the week before the exam.
You need a combined score of 63/90 across the two exam dialogues. Each dialogue is marked out of 45. A score of 29/45 is the minimum per-dialogue threshold to avoid a complete fail on that dialogue alone.

Reaching for heavily Sanskritised vocabulary and long compounds. They are technically correct and practically costly — they lengthen the rendition and slow delivery, and they are not how a Malayali family actually speaks to a doctor.

Miss the diagnosis, drop the figure, or paraphrase it away and the deduction model marks it — the same way a NAATI examiner would.
These are Malayalam-specific. They are not the generic advice you will find on every CCL site — they are the errors that show up when Malayalam speakers interpret under time pressure.
Malayalam offers a heavy Sanskritised register for almost every medical and legal term. It is technically correct and practically wrong: it lengthens your rendition, slows delivery, and is not how a Malayali family actually talks to a GP.
Malayalam agglutinates. A compound that is elegant on paper takes seconds to say. Delivery is 7 marks — keep it moving.
Blood test, bond, lease, Centrelink. Everyday Malayalam speech in Australia uses these in English, and so should your interpretation.
